20 Tips on Scalp Psoriasis Treatment

  1. Scalp psoriasis treatment requires removing or lifting the scales, in order for the topical medications to penetrate through the skin.
  2. Getting rid of the scales may be achieved by using Salicylic acid.
  3. The key to success is providing as much moisture to the scalp as possible.
  4. One of the most often prescribed and used remedies for scalp psoriasis treatment are tar shampoos, gels, and lotions.
  5. Tar shampoo should be used on a daily basis (or at least a few times a week); the shampoo must be left on the scalp for about five minutes.
  6. If coal tar fails, then topical steroids (less or more potent) and calcipotriol (Dovobet®, Daivobet®, Taclonex®) may be prescribed.
  7. If there are just a few plaques, then intralesional steroid injections may also be used.
  8. Mild forms may be treated without any medications, by just using an emollient ointment, cream, or oil.
  9. Treatment is easier to perform using shampoos, lotions and sprays, rather than creams or ointments.
  10. Alcohol-based remedies may sting your scalp.
  11. Psoriasis can be successfully treated by UV light (i.e. the UVB fiber-optic comb). You can also buy a home UVB "brush". Short hair will allow the UVB light to easier get to the scalp.
  12. Regular shampoos may dry your scalp, strip the scalp of the natural oils and therefore make the condition worse.
  13. Various oils, added to a regular shampoo, often help. Add 5-50 drops of essential Tea tree oil or essential Rosemary oil to the regular moisturizing shampoo bottle then shake.
  14. Scalp psoriasis is difficult to treat because of the hair on the scalp.
  15. Treatment requires persistence and a trial and error approach.
  16. Taking daily 1 Table spoon of Coconut oil internally may also help.
  17. Adding an Omega-3-6-9 supplement to your diet may also sufficiently help.
  18. Excimer 308 nm laser may be used successfully for the treatment.
  19. Anti-dandruff shampoos are known to help some people with scalp psoriasis (and to have no effect on the others).
  20. Scalp psoriasis is treatable.
